Empowering young leaders to play a constructive role in the development of human rights in their community and the world!
The Reclaiming Our Dreams: Youth Leadership Institute provides middle and high school scholars from the Shawnee and Portland areas (of Louisville, Kentucky) with opportunities to engage with their peers, families and community through innovative teambuilding and leadership development, cross-generational training and education in civil and human rights, digital storyelling and community mapping projects, and oral histories of West Louisville neighborhoods.
Together, students, staff and mentors work to develop and implement civil and human rights education curriculum, engaging with scholars and community leaders to increase their confidence and competence as strong social justice leaders, address neighborhood issues, and participate in service-learning opportunities.
This year long project launched in 2010, with question and answer session for parents on September 23rd from 6:00-8:00 p.m., at the University of Louisville, and a 2 and 1/2 day training in a nationally recognized "Undoing Racism" workshop with The People's Institute for Survival and Beyond September 28th through October 2nd, at the Portland Community Center.
The Youth Leadership Institute continues to meet on Saturdays during the school year at the Shawnee Boys & Girls Club, and will close in a two week summer cap in June 2011.
The University of Louisville College of Arts & Sciences, in partnership with Jefferson Country Race Community and Child Welfare Initiative and Louisville Metro Department of Public Health & Wellness - Center for Health Equity, is now recruiting students to participate in an inspiring new project.
